San Miguel de Allende Street Pano #1 ‘la Tortilleria’

The last series on cacti paintings worked well in that I learnt more about greens. I realize I’m comfortable with greens and therefore the problem painting that launched the green series is not so much a problem with greens but more how I’m warming the highlights and cooling shadows.

This year I’m again heading south to the quaint and artistic town of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. Last year I only brought my camera gear which I am again, but I’m also bringing some painting supplies. When travelling by plane, there are very limited choices due to weight and size restrictions. Since I’m gone for 3 months I thought I would pay the fees for the extra baggage and just bring more.

Oil on canvas board, 8” 16”

I wanted to practice a bit with street scenes before I head out on the actual streets and alleys of San Miguel. Since much of the town is composed of one story buildings I selected the 8” x 16” pano format as this allowed me to have several of the brightly and differently coloured buildings in one street painting.

The reference photo below is one I took last year from the corner of Coliego (where the staircase market starts) and Puente de Umeran.
